Job Summary and Qualifications

Perform a variety of duties including the application and removal of casts, ordering supplies and materials, fitting of orthopedic soft goods, setting up of traction and the transportation of patients to and from treatment areas.

Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics:

  1. Education: High school diploma or GED. Completion of a Certified Orthopedic Technology training program, Allied Health program in a related field with Surgical Assist program, or accredited medical assistant program preferred.
  2. Experience: Minimum two (2) years’ experience in a clinic and/or hospital setting
  3. Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served (if applicable).

Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required:

  1. Required: None
  2. Preferred: Certification by The National Board of Certification for Orthopedic Technologists (NBCOT).

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Provide assistance to physicians and/or apply orthopedic casts to patients as directed by medical staff personnel. 
  2. Apply and/or remove braces, splints, artificial limbs and bandages under supervision 
  3. Assist in lifting and positioning patients for treatments 
  4. Assist in transporting patients to and from treatment areas 
  5. Perform routine maintenance on casting equipment and ensure cleanliness and safety 
  6. Set up frames and traction devices per physicians’ orders 
  7. Order casting and orthopedic supplies and materials as needed and maintain adequate inventory and records of supplies ordered 
  8. Serve as liaison with sales representatives to review and evaluate products.

  1. Supports the mission and vision of the Methodist Healthcare System. Understands and is committed to helping the Methodist Healthcare System and its associated facilities achieve its goals.
  2. Must learn and comply with System and facility safety policies and rules; must use appropriate safety equipment and procedures at all times; must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors; be familiar with all safety features of equipment, tools or materials encompassed by job duties; and must check with supervisors (prior to job performance) if there is a question as to the safe procedure to be used for any job function.
  3. Adheres to the MHS Code of Conduct and demonstrates ethical behavior as expected by our patients, colleagues and the community. Understands the personal obligation to report any activity that appears to violate applicable laws, rules regulations or the Code of Conduct itself.
  4. Completes other duties as assigned.
